A study at the University of Missouri-Columbia has found a conncetion between brain damage of the right parietal lobe and an increase in feelings of spirituality. The study followed approximately 26 individuals who were considered brain-damaged and capable of functioning, but also considered "walking wounded." Each individual was tested on a standard measure of spirituality and was found to have increased feeling of spirituality and religious experiences after their brain injury.

According to the Encyclopedia, "the right parietal lobe is especially involved in appreciation of spatial relationships." The lobe is located on the upper right side of the cerebral hemisphere on the outer surface.

Preventing TBI

The National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have developed a safety tip list that may assist in prevention of a traumatic brain injury. The list includes the following:

• wear a seatbelt
• buckle children into child safety seats, booster seats properly
• keep firearms and bullets locked away in a cabinet
• use handrails on stairways
• use a step-stool when reaching for upper-shelf objects
• install window guards to avoid children from falling out windows
• use safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs
• ensure that a child’s playground has a shock-absorbing surface

NINDS and CDC also have advised that a helmet always be worn during the following activities:

• riding a bicycle and motorcycle
• contact sports including hockey, rugby and football
• in-line skating, skateboarding
• riding a horse
• playing baseball or softball
• skiing and snowboarding
